Sal and Pimenta: Lover scaling

Use one Lover to stack the other hero, then sell or respec the Lover before the final stretch.

Use as templateCreates a private editable copy.
0.5.5 checkThe 0.5.5 notes do not change either Lover card, The Spicy, The Brisk, Plague Bauble, Duelist's Foil, or the Sal items listed here. Several Duelist and Warrior rank modifiers were buffed, so use the current A/S cards below instead of older screenshots. The pair statistics in the Reddit post are a 0.5.4 snapshot.
Chapter 02

Why the pair falls off

The post quotes an odd pair-data snapshot: Sal and Pimenta were the fifth most-played pair, cleared Act 1 in 81% of runs, then fully cleared only 38%. The author's read is that players keep both Lover specs too long.

The permanent stats are useful, but a Lover unit has given up its own carry specialization. The fix is simple: let one Lover feed stats to the other hero, give that hero The Spicy or The Brisk, then move off the Lover during Act 2.

The Act 1 ruleBuy Sal and Pimenta. Whichever reaches Rank B first takes The Lover. The second one takes the carry spec: The Spicy on Pimenta or The Brisk on Sal. Keep them directly in front of and behind each other so the permanent stat gain triggers every combat.

Pimenta stands directly in front of Lover Sal. Sal's current card gives the hero in front 20 permanent Defense, with 20 more for Pimenta. The displayed items are targets, not an Act 1 requirement.

Chapter 05

Pimenta carry

Pepper Spray now: Pimenta makes a four-second cloud. Each second it deals 5 damage plus 75% Magic and 50% Defense, then applies 2 Poison plus 1 per 20 Defense. After Stall (15), every enemy in the cloud also gives her 2 HP/S plus 2 per rank.

The post aims for 300 or more Defense before leaning on The Spicy. At that point the author prioritizes Attack Speed and Omnivamp over more defensive items. Debuff sources matter because every distinct Debuff on the target adds another Spicy trigger.

  • Duelist's Foil: +20 Attack Speed and +15 Omnivamp. Every 15 auto attacks, a Duelist holder gains 1 Attack Speed. The source calls this best in slot for Spicy Pimenta.
  • Sigil: +10 Attack Speed and +7 Omnivamp. This is the inexpensive Attack Speed and Omnivamp item mentioned in the post.
  • Plague Bauble: At combat start, it applies 3 Poison, 6 Frost, and 9 Burn to every enemy. It supplies three Debuff types before Pimenta starts attacking.

The author's claim that this Pimenta can solo challenges and bosses is an experience report, not a guaranteed breakpoint. She still needs enough Omnivamp to heal through Burn and Poison.

Pimenta's Rank B choice

The Lover is the setup card when Pimenta reaches B first. The Spicy is the carry card when Sal reaches B first. These are the current 0.5.5 cards; the A and S pools below are current too.

The Spicy

Discussed in source

Gain the Duelist class and 20 Attack Speed. On auto attack, for each type of Debuff on the target inflict 2 (+1 Rank) more of that Debuff and deal 10 (+75 Attack Speed) bonus damage.

Recommended

Discussed in sourceUse this on the Pimenta carry line. Lover Sal has already stacked Pimenta's Defense, and The Spicy turns fast attacks plus several Debuff types into real damage.

The Seasoned

Game data only

Gain the Mage class and 25 Magic. Pepper Spray expands in size and lasts 1 second longer. After Stall (15), Tanks and Mages gain 20 (+20 Rank) Defense. Backup.

The Lover

Discussed in source

At start of combat, Heroes directly behind Pimenta permanently gain 15 Attack Speed. Sal gains 15 more.

Viable

Discussed in sourceTake this when Pimenta reaches B first and Sal is the planned carry. Put Sal directly behind her, then sell or respec Pimenta in Act 2.

Keep the scaled Spicy Pimenta. The usual move is to sell Lover Sal for damage or support. If you find a respec, the post specifically suggests changing Sal to The Breezy and keeping her as a partner. Duelists, Mystics, and reliable Debuff appliers also fit.

Sal stands directly behind Lover Pimenta. Pimenta's current card gives the hero behind her 15 permanent Attack Speed, with 15 more for Sal. Keep Sal alone in the back two rows when using Wizard's Focus.

Chapter 09

Sal carry

Permafrost now: Sal's attacks also hit the enemy nearest her target for 10 damage plus 50% Magic and apply 1 Frost plus 1 per rank. The effect stacks. The Brisk lets that bonus damage Crit, adds Frost on Crit, and gives Sal Crit from Attack and Magic whenever she casts.

That is why the item list is broad. The source likes Magic, Attack, Attack Speed, Crit, starting mana, and on-hit effects.

  • Wizard's Focus: +75 Magic. If the holder is the only hero in the back two rows, they start combat with 50 more Mana and 50 more Crit. The source's first choice. Its positioning condition is why Sal stays by herself in the back two rows.
  • Mage's Wand: +25 Starting Mana and +25 Magic. A Mage holder gains 6 Magic on an active-ability kill. Sal remains a Mage after taking The Brisk, so ability kills can keep adding Magic.
  • Spellblade: +15 Crit, +12 Attack, and +12 Magic. Casting grants 30 Attack; auto attacking grants 2 Magic. A flexible Attack and Magic option when the first two items do not appear.
  • Polymath's Prism: +25 Starting Mana and +10 HP/S. The holder gains 20% more of each class's primary stats. The Brisk makes Sal a Mage and Warrior, so both class stat packages matter.
  • Siphoning Dagger: +20 Attack Speed, +15 Crit, and +25 Attack. Auto attacks steal 1 Mana from the target. Attack Speed, Crit, Attack, and mana denial all contribute.

Sal's Rank B choice

The Lover sets up carry Pimenta. The Brisk is the source author's preferred Sal carry spec because its damage starts faster than The Breezy in this line.

The Breezy

Discussed in source

Gain the Duelist class, 20 Attack Speed, and 1 Attack Range. Whenever a Mage or Duelist inflicts a Debuff, they gain 0 (+1 Rank) Attack Speed and 0 (+1 Rank) Magic. Backup.

Viable

Discussed in sourceThe source treats this as a good late respec beside carry Pimenta. For a Sal carry, it ramps more slowly than The Brisk.

The Lover

Discussed in source

At start of combat, Heroes directly in front of Sal permanently gain 20 Defense. Pimenta gains 20 more.

Viable

Discussed in sourceTake this when Sal reaches B first. Keep Pimenta directly in front while the permanent Defense stacks, then sell or respec Sal in Act 2.

The Brisk

Discussed in source

Gain the Warrior class and 50 Attack. Bonus damage from Permafrost can Crit. On Crit, inflict 1 (+1 Rank) Frost. On cast, Sal gains 0 (+33 Attack +33 Magic) Crit.

Recommended

Discussed in sourceThe preferred Sal carry path in the post. Permafrost's bonus hit can Crit, and Attack, Magic, Attack Speed, Crit, and mana all help the plan.

Sell Lover Pimenta once Sal has enough stacks, then buy a real frontliner. The source calls out Intrepid Kai because Warrior Crits reduce Defense and Kai can hold long enough for Sal's fast kill. The post also suggests Backup Tilly; the example uses The Sharp because that is Tilly's current Backup path for buffing Warriors.

Chapter 12

When to sell the Lover

The post says roughly halfway through Act 2, not at a fixed shop. Keep scaling while fights are comfortable. Once the Lover's missing combat spec is costing you damage or frontline strength, sell or respec it and spend the slot on the carry's actual need.

For Pimenta, that is usually more damage, a Mystic, another Duelist, or a Debuff source. For Sal, it is usually a durable frontliner. Do not sell the stacked carry; the permanent stats stay on that hero.

What this guide can proveThe post's 81% / 38% snapshot appears to use redrift.gg's all-modes pair table, not the Red Rift-only filter. Those rates can change as late logs arrive. Pair appearance also does not show the exact specialization, items, positioning, or sale timing in each run. The strategy and item rankings are aahdin's field notes. The front-and-back scaling boards follow the current Lover card text; the later boards are practical examples built from the post, not copied endgame formations.
